The 84th Academy Awards was a nod to old Hollywood glamour. White was definitely the color of the evening. Here are the white hot looks that I just can't stop thinking about.

Gwyneth Paltrow owned the red carpet in her exquisite Tom Ford ensemble. It's not easy to pull off a cape in this era of super hero cinema but Gwyneth did so seamlessly. The Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie diamond cuff was exactly the elegant yet bold bit of bling she needed to secure her position as best dressed.

Rooney Mara was breathtaking in Givenchy. An absolutely gorgeous combination of haute couture and personal style.

Milla Jovovich attended the Oscars for her first time in this brilliant Ellie Saab gown and Edie Parker clutch.

Octavia Spencer looked lovely in Tadashi Shoji. The cinched waist complimented her curves perfectly. Plus, she completed her look with the best accessory of all...her new golden statue. Congratulations Octavia!

Tiffany Colors Creative opens in Pioneer Square

On the first Thursday of 2012 TC Creative opened it's doors to the public.

The studio is a beautiful venue where creative dreams will certainly come true. The space is 900 square feet of pure artistic potential and is available to rent for special events, image consultations, photo shoots and any other type of gathering your heart may desire.

TC Creative is the brain child of Tiffany Troiano Lowry (aka Tiffany Colors) who was recently named half of the best makeover team in Seattle.

Here is Tiffany with her adoring husband Sean. It's obvious from this picture that they are pleased as punch about her latest accomplishment.

And they should be!

The opening was a smashing success filled with art, inspiration, decoration and a scintillating selection of Northwest wines and confections.

Just look at this divine delectable made by KMBCrafts.

The devil is in the details and I was very impressed by the fact that the frosting matched the color of the window panes.

Sozo was at the soiree pouring samples of their incredible Washington wines. I highly recommend the Generosity Syrah Tempranillo which is a fruity, floral, spicy delight.

Shop Paris With Love brought sparkle to the scene with their elegant collection of unique handmade jewelry that dazzled me so much I purchased a pair of earrings from their retro collection.

Those dangles really put a cherry on the cake of my outfit...

Congratulations! You have made it through another year!

The hope and promise that comes with a new beginning is the perfect time to refocus on health and beauty. Here are some easy tips to help 2012 be your most amazing year yet.

1. Be sweet to yourself
No more negative self talk. Imagine how wonderful it would feel to remove your own worst critic from your life. Telling ourselves that we aren't good enough to achieve our goals leads us to a self fulfilling prophecy. So next time you catch yourself mentally berating your good intentions switch up your inner dialogue with a positive mantra like “I can learn from the past. I am ready to transform my health. I know I can do this!” You will feel more confident and inspired to face your daily challenges.

2. Beauty really does come from within
It's not all about having the best moisturizer. Choosing to eat the right foods will give your skin a luminous glow. Fill your pantry with luscious fruits. Cook more meals at home. Stay away from anything processed. Use stevia as a sweetener instead of sugar. And drink more water!

3. Out with the old in with the new
Make room for something good to come into your life by getting rid of what you don't use or need. Clean out your closet and dresser. If you haven't worn something in a year, get rid of it! (One exception: hang on to your vintage dress collection.) Go through your make up and toss old mascara, foundation, eyeliner and any skin care product more than a year old. Clean your make up brushes. Once you have purged yourself of all this excess you can reassess what you really need and then treat yourself to a few new things.

4. Get your beauty sleep
Getting adequate sleep is the best way to help your body and mind function. Proper sleep will improve your mood and make you feel energized. Our bodies repair themselves and calcium is added to our bones as we sleep. Make sure your bedroom is a cozy little nest where you can nurture yourself by getting the rest you need.

5. Walk the walk
Walking is an excellent form of cardio and a completely realistic form of excercise that anyone can commit to. Even 15 minutes a day can enhance your quality of life. Make it fun. Bundle up and walk through the park, make a walking date with a friend, use your daily walk as a meditation to reaffirm your positive aspirations. Try it for a week. Not only will you feel amazing but your jeans will fit better too!

Don't sweat the small stuff. Find the humor in life's difficulties. Laughter really is good medicine. Surround yourself with sparkly self love and let 2012 be wonderful.

2011 is coming to a close in just a few hours. Which means it's that special time where everyone waves their opinion flag with a BEST OF list. Thought I'd jump on the band wagon and share some of my fave things that popped up in the NW this year.

The Sexton

Oh, how I love The Sexton!

The uber hip atmosphere is outdone only by the delicious selection of libations and nibbles.

The fare is a NW twist on classic southern staples. Try the hush puppies, yam fries and wasabi coleslaw.

The Sexton is conveniently located on Ballard Ave which means you can find me sipping a glass of Syrah at the bar whenever I am finished with clients in time for happy hour.

Fancy a drink?

This stylish vintage cocktail lounge is a gem in the up and coming Foster-Powell neighborhood of SE Portland.

Serving up unique drink concoctions and a nice selection of Oregon beers and wines in a plush environment that invites you to mix and mingle. The creative and mouthwatering menu items are made from hormone free meat and local organic ingredients. Basically, this place rules.

In NW fashion comfort reigns supreme and Scout Apparel is an excellent source for comfy chic.

I'm always down with a boutique that carries AG as well as C & C. So I definitely scout it out when I'm shopping on Capitol Hill.

American Horror Story

Albeit not particularly NW oriented, American Horror Story has been on my flat screen quite a lot this year.

This show isn't scary but it is super sexy and it also features the hottest red head on television since Ginger Grant.

With an all star cast of twisted characters this show does not disappoint.
My only complaint is that nothing makes me feel so much like a cougar as watching Tate throw a temper tantrum...

Girlie Xmas

Girlie Xmas is the annual girls night out for me and the bevy of beauties that I roll with. Back in the day when we were young, wild and ruled the streets of Portland we got dressed up and went out. All. The. Time.

Well we grew up, as young girls do, but we never grew out of the desire to get dolled up and hit the town. Last Saturday night was our 7th annual Girlie Xmas celebration.

This is how we do it...

We always meet somewhere for cocktails before dinner. This year the pre-func was at Sambar. I knew we were in trouble when Jay (our friendly bartender) sent us out a round of Sotol shots. What's a girl to do but imbibe?

Next on the agenda: sustenance.

My ladies and I don't mess around when we eat. So after succumbing to the Sotol we high tailed it to Revel for some casual fine dining and high end Korean comfort food.

As you can see from the menu we had a hard time narrowing down our choices. Everything sounded so good and the smells from the kitchen were intoxicating.

We ended up getting nearly one of everything.

I must say the Dungeness crab, seaweed noodle, creme fraiche, spicy red curry dish was my absolute favorite.

After dinner the leash of foxes slipped into Hazelwood, a dark and sultry speakeasy in Ballard.

This is where things get a little blurry...

The rest of the evening is, well, private. I am so lucky to have such wonderful women in my life. Even though the night went on forever it didn't last long enough. I'm already looking forward to next year.

What's a girl to wear?

Personally, I love the glitz of holiday glamour and really it's only appropriate to dress like this for a few weeks out of the year. Sure you could dust off that little black dress you wore last year or you could choose to invest in some dazzling separates that you can mix and match with the staples you already have in your closet.

This Saturday, November 12 from 6pm to 9pm Suite 300 is hosting an opening reception for Seattle photographer David Wentworth. While on assignment for the Village Voice, he was able to capture a unique collection of intimate and eerily peaceful moments behind the chaotic scenes of NYFW.

This set of images make up Behind The Light: Inside NYC Fashion Week.

His vision is to present the spectacle of the fashion industry in an entirely new way. Telling a story of the regular people who are involved with the production. He presents a tender and haunting glimpse behind the glamour that most fashion enthusiasts never get to see.

Last week I had an opportunity to attend the Kimberly Baker trunk show at Spa Noir.

First of all, I simply couldn't resist because I hadn't been to Spa Noir (where I began my career as an esthetician) since they upgraded to the new location. Second of all, well, if you are familiar with Kimberly's magnificent designs you already know.

Here is one of her new pieces that I adore:
The Gilly Necklace.

Kimberly was so captivated by the Game of Thrones book series that she named many of her new creations after characters in the novels.

This is Jessica, owner of Spa Noir and a friend of mine, striking a pose with the fabulous Kimberly Baker herself. As you can see Jessica is modeling the Gilly Necklace. What a gorgeous accessory!

I'm a fan of the classics and I must admit that I lust after Kimberly Baker's classic embellishments.

Seattle Style at PULSE

As much as I adore the big houses of fashion my true love will always be the unknown designers striving to make their stylistic dreams come true.

RAW:natural born artists is an independent arts organization that celebrates and exposes these up and coming artists. Their reach stretches across 22 communities nationwide. Last week Seattle's chapter of RAW presented PULSE, an event showcasing the potential visionaries of our future.

One designer that I am particularly excited about is Deidra Mayer of Spider Baby. Deidra and I went to high school together back in the dark ages of the late 80's...long before alternative became mainstream. In a sea of cheerleader chic and Debbie Gibson worshipers, what can I say, we were different.

Deidra draws inspiration from her avant-guard adolescent background when creating unique hoodies and tees for her clothing line. All hoodies have hand sewn fabric applique. Each one is an individual, just like her.

Here is Deidra (center) with two of her models.

It made my small town heart beat faster to see her fashion creations on the runway.

Repair and Renew Sun Damaged Skin In Autumn

The days are getting shorter and dampness has returned to the air. As the rainy days prevail our skin goes through a rough transformation. Proper skin care in the fall requires correcting all of the skin damage dealt by the summer months while shielding your skin from the cold weather conditions ahead.

Over-exposure to the sun during the summer may mean that your skin is suffering from dehydration. If your face feels harsh and has a lackluster appearance you most likely have a build up of dead skin cells. This superfluous layer acts as a barrier preventing moisturizer from penetrating the tissue.

To repair your skin from this condition exfoliation is crucial. I recommend using Dermalogica Microfoliant once daily to restore your skin to a smooth, supple surface. If your skin is extremely sensitive I suggest using a Clarisonic Brush instead.

Also, ditch the light gel cleansers that feel so good in summer and use a creamy cleanser to give your skin some extra moisture while you cleanse.

Treat those unwanted sun spots. Autumn is the best time of the year to have a glycoic peel to get rid of skin discoloration caused by UV rays. The process will remove the damaged surface layer and healthier, clearer skin will emerge.

Don't neglect your body!

Chances are the sun shone on more than just your face this summer. Soothe your body skin with a Glycolic Moisturizer once weekly to regain your all over velvety texture.

Use rich, emollient lotions after you shower to seal in the moisture that your body has just absorbed. Pay special attention to your hands and feet.

Apply lip balm frequently to soften and protect your lips.

Here are some delicious foods that will give you healthy skin from the inside out.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates are in season from October to January and are an absolutely luscious snack. An excellent source of iron, pomegranates can help regulate skin that has turned pale from anemia. Other benefits include inflammation-fighting antioxidants that smooth the skin's texture, and Vitamin C which balances oil production and encourages growth of new skin cells.

Avocado

I eat avocados all the time and never feel guilty about it. Yes, it's true that avocados are high in fat. But this is the good kind of fat (monounsaturated) that actually helps lower cholesterol. Avocados are an excellent source of Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant important for maintaining a youthful complexion.

Salmon

Did you know that humans are not able to produce omega-3s? Precisely why we need to eat foods like Salmon. Dining on salmon also improves skin elasticity by increasing the production of collagen, keratin and melanin.

Sweet Potato

Green Tea

Drinking two or more cups of either black or green tea per day can reduce the risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer by thirty percent. Eye Candy

The change of the seasons brings about all kinds of beauty challenges. A client emailed me last week with this question:

"Hi Susan,

I'm still tan and not ready for you to peel it away, but I wonder if you have an eye treatment for the under eye? I am looking racoonish and getting dry spots on my lids.

Thanks"

Tired eyes at the end of summer is a common problem.

Luckily, I do have an easy eye treatment that you can do yourself.

Here was my answer:

"I don't do an eye treatment at Suite 300 but here's a little at home trick you can try...
Get some organic chamomile tea (in bags) thoroughly wet two tea bags and put them in a sealed ziploc in the freezer. When the bags are frozen put them on your eyes as an eye treatment. The chamomile is a natural anti inflammatory and the cold helps as well.

Chamomile is also a gentle sedative and safe to use on sensitive skin.

This quick fix is also useful for eyes that have been strained by insomnia or anxiety.

So lay back and take a few minutes to restore the windows to your soul.

Fashion First Seattle

Autumn is here and it's time for fall fashion.

The NW is no NYC but Fashion First has been showcasing local designers, retailers and fashion enthusiasts for the last eight years.

Here I am arriving on the red carpet. The look I'm going for is 'blogger chic'. I was man repelling a bit in this outfit and I have to admit it felt great.

Earrings and necklace: Kimberly Baker, sweater: Allsaints Spitalfields, dress: Greylin, boots: Aldo.

Bumped into John Curley in the VIP lounge. He was the designated auctioneer for the fundraising portion of the event.

John Curley is quite possibly the hardest working man in show business. He sang, supercharged and sweat his way through the auction. He even succeeded in sweet talking Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon to work the runway.

As the models were stepping out in the season's latest trends I took a moment to get to know my fellow audience members.

This lady in red got her sparkly ensemble at Nordstrom.

Why Nordy's you ask?

She told me "I always shop at Nordstrom. In fact, on the day when the Rapture was supposed to come I spent the whole day at the downtown store because that's where I feel closest to God."

It's always nice to have some eye candy in the next row and these boys couldn't have been cuter. At one point I had their information to include in this post but unfortunately (and typically) I misplaced it at the after party, or the after-after party...oh well.

The trends this year ranged from opulent...

to mixing patterns...

to bright jewel tones and above the knee boots.

And it may not be politically correct but fur is everywhere this season.

There, I said it.

All the collections were note worthy but Lizzie Parker took it. Her staggered runway was, well, staggering. These layering essentials will easily transfer from catwalk to sidewalk.

The grand finale was celebrity model and jewelry designer Mandy Moon wearing a one of a kind dress made from pages of Seattle magazine created by the Art Institute of Seattle's Fashion Design graduate Rosalyn Librande.

So the lights have come up, the complimentary bubbles have been consumed and it's time for this Beauty Queen to do some shopping. See you in the boutiques!

We shot these behind the facade of the Old Rainier Brewery Cold Storage Building in Georgetown. Beth is wonderful to work with. She has an infectious enthusiasm that encourages her model to shine.

Look who showed up for a photo op as Beth and I were wrapping up! This is my favorite photo from the shoot and I have affectionately titled it 'My Grease Fantasy'. Thank you Beth for taking such smoking hot pics of me and my sweetheart! You are lethal with a lens and I love you!

Photo Shoot With Beth Dixson Part 1: Getting Ready to Roll

About a month ago the notorious Beth Dixson sent me this message...

"I was thinking it might be fun to do a biker babe photoshoot with you. I was sitting under body painted biker babes while eating BBQ the other day and thought it would be fun to do something like that with you...especially since I was pretty sure you're a motorcycle gal. Not the body paint, but you know, the hot bike chick."

I was thrilled of course. I did a pin up shoot with Beth and two of my besties a while back and we had a blast. So after I told her I was all in, I had to go down the checklist to get rough and ready.

The look we were going for was inspired by Varla of Russ Meyer's cinematic masterpiece Faster Pussycat Kill Kill. Clearly I had my work cut out for me if I wanted to pull off vixen of vroom vroom style.

Time to call in reinforcements. I secured my soul mate, I mean favorite hair and makeup artist, Crystal Kosta to help in my transformation.

And, as always, Crystal worked her magic.

This is Crystal's car modeling the hair extensions she selected to help me have the bodacious biker babe bouffant I wanted for the photo shoot. I think her car looks pretty good as a red head.

The day before the shoot I went to see Crystal at her salon Frederick's of Greenwood for a color and *gasp* for her to cut bangs. I haven't had bangs since I was in junior high. But you can see by the look on my face that I trust in her mad skills.

After she works me over I go home to drink water and get a good night's sleep.

Fast forward to 6am the morning of the shoot. I'm back at Frederick's pounding espresso and getting into hair and makeup. Obviously I'm not a morning person.

Why is Crystal so perky this early in the morning?

It's a good thing she is though because in a matter of minutes she transforms me.

Into this.

Beth arrives and we all relocate to Georgetown where the biker babe photo shoot will take place.

I'm finally ready for my close up but I couldn't have done it without my trusty sidekick. How cute are we with our matching bangs?

So that's how we do it.

The allure of the the pin up girl goes all the way down to her skivvies. Lucky thing for us ladies that lingerie is trending towards vintage style.

Dinner in my Garden

Once a year I host a dinner party in my garden. Thought I would share the experience. Everything you are about to see was made from scratch by myself or one of my dear friends.

This was the first course, cucumber gazpacho with grilled garlic bread. I was turned on to this summer soup when I worked for Tom Douglas.

Here is the recipe in case you want to thrill guests at your own gathering...

4 cukes
6 cloves of garlic
1 cup raw hulled almonds
1 loaf of good bread, de-crusted and soaked in water
1/4 cup champagne vinegar
1/4 cup lime juice
2 cups pure olive oil
salt and pepper

Blend ingredients together except the oil. I'm a fan of the immersion blender but you could easily do this in a food processor. When the mixture reaches the texture you like drizzle the oil in slowly as every thing blends together.

Our second course was a spinach and arugula salad with seared figs, cambozola and balsamic.

Our main course, tortellini with pesto sauce paired with a lush nebbiolo.

Our dessert course was an exquisite cherry tart with toasted almond ice cream and caramel sauce. I found the recipe in the Sunday Suppers At Lucques cookbook.

Great Expectations

Almost every time I treat a new client they get up from the bed, rosy and glowing, and say the same thing...

"I don't know what I expected but it wasn't that!"

It's hard to translate what I do in a facial into words. I have been given many names, healer, intuitive, I've even been called a wizard.

Thank you for the compliments! I continue to aspire to give you the best.

I am writing this post to try and help you know what to expect when you come to Suite 300 Skin Care for a facial with me.

Expect me to listen
Every facial begins with a conversation between my client and myself where we discuss what we should do during our session. Our skin is constantly changing so I take time to look at the current condition of their complexion while I listen to what my client wants (and doesn't want) from their facial.

Expect me to create a customized facial just for you
I have my own practice for a reason. When I worked in spas I was constantly getting in trouble for 'giving my clients too much'. I don't believe in giving my clients to much. I understand that skin care is a luxury for many. That is precisely why I strive to provide sublime skin care throughout every session.

Expect to be relaxed
My clients frequently ask me if I am also a massage therapist. The answer is no, but I did consider going to massage school because I strongly believe in the healing power of touch. I take great care tendering a pressure point massage of the scalp and ears while my client steams followed by a deep tissue massage of the shoulders, neck and face. I take specific care targeting tension between the shoulder blades, stretching out strained muscles in the neck and releasing the jaw. This is the point in the facial where most of my clients fall into a dream state.

Expect me to pay attention
Not all skin is created equal. I may decide my client needs to bask under a warm infra red light while they are masking or I may select stroking their skin gently with soothing chilled globes to close pores and alleviate blotches.

Expect me not to push products on you
Another reason I didn't like working in bigger spas is that I never made my sales quota. I don't believe in high pressure sales. If my client has a question about products I feel confident that they will ask me. Period.

Expect to leave feeling euphoric
I'm not kidding. My clients are blissfully intoxicated when they leave my studio. When you come see me make sure to plan on coming in when you can relax afterwards so you can continue to float through your day.

Know that my regard doesn't end when you walk out the door. I am available for my clients whenever they need me. If you have a question about your skin, a concern about a product or need my professional advice in any way, I am on your side.

Expect to form a relationship that you can depend on. Every client of mine can expect to have an Esthetician that looks out for them.

Mother Knows Best

This is my mom. Isn't she pretty?

In honor of Mother's Day I will reveal to you the beauty secrets she shared with me.

"Take care of your skin." I was twelve when she brought home the Clinique 3 step system for me. The bar of face soap in the smooth green plastic dish, the tall pink bottle of Clarifying Lotion and the square yellow container of Dramatically Different Moisturizer. She taught me to use upward strokes when touching my face and to be delicate. "You have to start now. Someday you will be glad you did."

"Always have a sharp haircut." My mother, sister and I would get our hair done every four weeks at Hickox Salon. It was the nicest salon in Portland and Sharon Hickox herself was our stylist. Mom never told us how to wear our hair. "When you have your hair done by the best you can trust in their skill."

"Invest in classic pieces." She would say while we shopped at Nordstrom, pointing out the difference between a flimsy, trendy jacket and a full length camel hair coat. "Choose well made garments that will stay in fashion and last for years."

This is my mother and I a few months ago at my wedding. As you can see, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Everything Under The Sun

I just back from a week in Maui. What can I say, I was desperately seeking sunshine.

There are times when being a NW girl isn't easy. Remembering that less is more when it comes to absorbing some much needed vitamin D is a perfect example. I get it, we're pale, we have at least a mild case of seasonal affective disorder, and dammit we want to wear our cute spring and summer clothes.

Everything in moderation ladies. UVB rays may burn our skin but UVA rays prematurely age us. Not to worry. You can have your sun and beat it too. Here's a list of things to pack in your carry on to make sure you still look healthy when you get back home from your vacation.

1. A big hat. It is crucial to protect your face, neck and chest. Nobody wants to end up looking like a leather bag.

2. Glo Therapeutics Oil Free SPF 40+ Sunscreen. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! It doesn't feel greasy and it provides excellent moisture due to it's high content of hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.

3. Dermalogica Waterblock Solar Spray SPF 30 for the body. Great water resistant protection and the spray is so easy to reapply after swimming. Antioxidant vitamins C and E improve skin smoothness and softness while controlling skin-aging free radical damage while vitamin A helps increase skin elasticity. The Blushing Bride

Many of you know that I got married two months ago but hardly anyone knows the story of my skin care regime before the big day. For obvious reasons this is REALLY embarrassing for me to tell. I'm just keeping it real.

I am constantly counseling brides on their skin care schedule so they can look like a perfect peach when hugged, kissed and mobbed by the paparazzi. One would think that I would apply the same reasoning to myself. Sadly, no. I decided to do my own skin services to save money. Between planning, working out and helping my mother with her outfit (which took way longer than you can possibly imagine) I never got around to my skin.

A week before the wedding I panicked. What was I thinking? I'm an esthetician for chrissakes. All I really want is to have beautiful skin that makes me sigh euphorically when I look back at the pictures twenty years from now. One. Week. WTF?

In my desperation I texted my esthetician begging her to squeeze me in the next day. She responded right away, informing me she could see me first thing in the morning, ending her message with 'Jeez girl'.

I know.

Anyway, out of the goodness of her heart she met me at the crack of dawn the next day. Greeting me with the simple question "Do you want your skin to look good today or do you want it to look good next week?"

"Next week." I answered.

We both knew the next hour was going to be gnarly. What should have been months of skin care was going to have to be condensed to one single treatment. I braced myself.

Let me just say that I doubt anyone who wasn't a skin care professional could have gone through the pain and ugliness that I endured. My friend, mentor and esthetician for 13 years (whose name will not be mentioned to protect the innocent) had to work miracles in minutes. She did.

When my fiancée saw me his eyes bugged out.

"Are you going to look alright for the wedding?" He asked.

I nodded. It hurt my face to speak.

Over the course of the next week my skin peeled off in sheets like a reptile. I couldn't look directly at my clients not to mention family or soon to be in laws.

But here's the thing, the day before the wedding I exfoliated the last of the snake skin away and my complexion was completely flawless.

To all the brides who read this, cringing, I want to say this doesn't have to be your story. Plan ahead. Talk to an esthetician and schedule your skin care services in a timely fashion so you can enjoy your treatments and have a healthy glow in all the pictures from your shower and bachelorette party. Take it from me, you don't want to stress about your skin at the last second. You'll have enough to stress about without that.

Pure and Simple

I go on a cleanse every year starting the day after my birthday. The gift of health and beauty is the best gift I can give myself. I cleanse one day for each year I have lived. And, no, I'm not telling how long my cleanse is this year. So many detox programs claim to be the ultimate. Here is mine. I developed it myself using my background in natural remedies and nutrition. It is easy to send our bodies into healing crisis. Precisely why I take a gentle approach.

The NW Beauty Queen's Pure and Simple Cleanse

First and foremost I reward myself. On the first day of my cleanse I go to the Olympus Spa.

The Olympus Spa is lady heaven and it's free to go on your birthday. Hands down the best spa experience to be had in the NW. I highly recommend the body scrub and moisturizining treatment. Although I enjoy myself just as much soaking in the hydrotherapy tubs, basking in the mugwort sauna and relaxing in the jade room. Hydration is crucial so bring a water bottle.

My trip to the spa is a great way to kick off my diet and supplement regime...

No caffeine

No alcohol

I eat mostly raw foods, but listen to what my body tells me. Dizziness is a red flag. When detoxing it's important to feed your body what it needs. Proteins like fish or quinoa are what I lean on when the raw isn't doing it for me.

Milk Thistle
I take milk thistle supplements (I am partial to the eclectic-institute fresh freeze dried) to help my liver in detoxify itself and to prevent incoming toxins. The properties of milk thistle cause each liver cell to be protected. This protective feature keeps the liver focused on releasing existing toxins instead of fighting new ones. The overall effects strengthen the liver enabling it to function optimally.

Red Clover
I drink tea made from the dried red clover flowers to cleanse and purify my blood improving circulation and overall cardiovascular health. Red clover also assists in detoxifying the liver. Red clover is also important to keep the complexion clear during the cleanse as it is also used for dermal inflammations, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and various rashes.

Spirulina

I adore spirulina. I drink in mixed with juice in the morning instead of my routine cup of coffee. Spirulina cleanses the lymphatic system. Have you ever had a huge underground blemish that felt like a bruise and had it's own heartbeat? That's a lymphatic breakout. Nobody wants those and spirulina can prevent them. Spirulina also contains fiber, specifically mucilage, that causes a feeling of fullness. Perfect to take the edge off of the cleansing hunger. For those who don't like the taste of the ocean I suggest taking this in the pressed pill form.

Probiotics
While flushing out toxins, the GI tract and colon can get thrown out of balance. To keep everything working properly I take a daily spoonful of the delicious yin yang carrots from locally owned and produced Firefly Kitchens.

Excercise
I'm partial to Vinyasa Power Yoga but any form of exercise will push the toxins from your body.

Water
Lots of it. The most pure and simple way to cleanse.

The Honor of the Decade

I was awestruck when Seattle Magazine informed me that Suite 300 Skin Care was included in the Best of 2010 issue and that I was invited to attend their Party of the Decade as a winner.

Being a small business owner is challenging. When I opened my first skin care studio in 2004 every day was a struggle. I had no idea how exhausting and unpredictable the process would be. Of course, there came a time when I questioned if all my hard work would prove fruitful. Upon confiding my fears to a friend I was given these words of wisdom to follow.

"A new business is like a newborn baby. No one knows how to take care of it at first. But if you are patient and nurturing, one day it will take care of you."

Indeed.

Being honored by Seattle Magazine was the moment when I felt like my baby was growing up and, like any proud parent, I am glowing with gratitude.

The Opaline Artist Reception at Suite 300

It's been over a week and my head is still spinning from the fabulous time I had at the opening night of Pin-Ups by Opaline Pictures.

Marne Lucas and Beth Dixson of Opaline Pictures came all the way from New York City to adorn the walls of Suite 300 Skin Care with their Pin-Up photographs. The exhibition is exceptional. The tease, allure and demure sensuality of their work is delicious eye candy. Yum, yum.

Here's a morsel to whet your appetite...

The show was well attended by Seattle hipsters and Ballard art walkers alike. I want to especially thank everyone who drove up from Portland for the event. There was a strong Portland presence at the party. Way to represent The City of Roses. Here is a picture of me and two of my oldest friends from Portland lingering in the entrance to Suite 300 Skin Care.

As you can see, we never miss an opportunity to dress up.

It was a hot, sultry night. People were pouring through the door and prosecco was flowing from the bottles...

For one night only, straight out of New York City...

Saturday, August 14th from 6pm to 9pm Beth Dixson and Marne Lucas of Opaline Pictures will be at Suite 300 showing off a portion their unique collection. If you think I'm good at giving facials, you should see me throw a party. I don't mean to brag, but I've got mad skills. This soiree will be no exception, beautiful girls, bubbles, Seattle's A-list and the most alluring, innovative compendium of Pin-Up photographs ever.

There are so many reasons why I am delighted to have this show hanging at my skin care studio. First of all, their work is amazing. Second of all, hosting this show is somewhat of a rite of passage for me. Beth, Marne and I all came from humble beginnings in Portland, Oregon. These were the days when Portland was secretly cool, long before it became trendy. Suffice it to say that the "in" scene was a diminutive, and fabulous, circle. Everyone knew everyone, at least peripherally. The peeps I rolled with (the mods and the girls who loved them) were younger than Beth and Marne. They were the ones we looked up to.

I met Marne at a photo shoot for Hickox Salon in 1992. Back in the day Hickox was Portland's version of haute couture hair. Their ads ruled the back pages of Portland's weekly publications. I worked as a receptionist at said salon and was called in as sort of a Girl Friday to help with the shoot. I remember it like it was yesterday. Marne walked in wearing jeans and a T-shirt, striking and statuesque, natural like she just rolled out of bed. I watched in awe as hair and make up transformed her into a raving beauty. The look she was selling was cutting edge,raw and punk rockeresque. She posed as if she were screaming. A scream had never looked so sexy. Awestruck, ogling I admired the way she worked the camera with a vengeance. I had the biggest girl crush on her ever.

Beth and I met at Passerby, an uber chic bar in Chelsea. It was in the midst of one of those magical New York nights, the kind where you flit from one incredible party to another, adrenaline and pleasure surging at max capacity. She and I were sardined into our seating accommodations. I was at once dazzled by her sparkling character. During the course of our dialog I discovered that her family lives in the same minuscule rural suburb as mine. I wont reveal the location, but not many people make it out of those woods. Beth and I became fast friends. Her loveliness captivated me, and her wit, and her whimsy. Chatting with her that night was the crown jewel in the tiara of my evening.

So here we are, years later, all grown up with our accomplishments tucked under our proverbial belts. I have the privilege of honoring them, for one night, with this artists reception. Beth and Marne are traveling all the way from Manhattan to present their exhibition to the art aficionados of Seattle. Thrilled doesn't scratch the surface of how elated I am to align forces with these Divas of lens and legend. These are the women who have inspired me. They were the ones I looked up to.

Have you been watching HBO's new miniseries The Pacific?

I have to admit that television is one of my guilty pleasures. Beyond the quality of the actors and content I am really enjoying the fashion on this show.

The 40's pin up look is hotter now then ever before. Swing dresses, peep toe pumps, victory rolls and Bakelite bangles. Online shopping is another guilty pleasure of mine and in my diligent searching I have compiled this pin up girl checklist.
Here are 6 easy steps to make the boys doll dizzy for an able-grable like you!

How to create your own pin up look for Spring/Summer 2010:

#1 Curves are the cat's meow

Show off your womanly figure. In the 40's fashion became more feminine. The dropped waist line went back to the natural waist line. Garments emphasized shoulders and bust, small waists, and skirts tailored to enhance broad hips. Patterns were bold and cheerful because, due to fabric rationing, women were making their house dresses from curtains, table cloths and their husband's old suits.

#2 Color is keen

Get creative with color. Colors of the 1940s were deep, rich, saturated hues, very vivid. Color was used to enhance style. Greens and turquoise would often be matched with maroons and rust-orange. Many colors were creatively used together, and the color was always worn in a stately way.

#3 Be well tressed

Hair is essential to Pin up style. Pin curls were tight and well defined. Some girls emanated "Rosie the Riveter" short hairstyles with modest curls tied up in a scarf. Other women wore their hair longer, twisting the front into side reverse rolls. The rolls frame the face meeting closely together on the top of the head creating a “V” shape, commonly called “Victory Rolls".

#4 Grandstand those gams

Silk and the newly popular nylon were hard to come by because they were needed to make parachutes for the war. What's a broad to do? Wear those stems bare ladies! Peep toes were key and high heels became higher.

#5 Take a powder

Make up was understated. Brows were manicured to a natural arc. Rosy cheeks were created by using a light blush. Shadows were worn in neutral browns and smoky grays. Lips were red and filled in beyond the lip line to emphasize the “Cupid's bow” curve of the top lip.

#6 Skin is in

Complexion, complexion, complexion. Healthy skin is the cherry on top of achieving your pin up look. The Ivory soap girl was the clean and pure ideal. To achieve a flawless face I suggest having a glycolic or enzyme peel at Suite 300 to transform your dull winter skin into peaches and cream.

Over the last year, many of my clients have become new mothers. I designed this facial just for women like them who need a little break from all the picking up, bending over, breastfeeding-induced slouching, and circle-under-the-eye areas.

Lash Envy

My eyelashes are my worst feature. Seriously. My lashes are light red, stubby and sparse. I know it could be worse, but it's not like I can do much about it. Weight can be lost, nails can be manicured, acne can clear up, what about us lash challenged ladies?

Eyelashes are important. They define the allure of our eyes. I have always been so jealous of long, lush lashes fluttering flirtatiously. I have tried mascara, eyelash curlers and lash extenders with minimal results. But my whole world changed when I had my first lash tint.

Lash tinting transformed my pale thin lashes into thick, dark fringe framing my tantalizing eyes.

Eyelash tinting is a process where a gentle vegetable dye is used to make the lashes look darker. The dye also coats the shaft of the hair enhancing the thickness of each lash. This Valentine's Day indulge in pleasure without feeling guilty.

Raise a glass with your lover. Studies have detirmined that red wine contains a substancial amount of bioflavinoids. Specifically, flavinoid antioxidants called resveratrol, shown to help lower glucose levels, maintain healthy capillaries, form collagen in connective tissue, and to support a healthy heart and immune system.

Researchers at the University of California at Davis concluded that the types of wine containing the highest concentrations of flavinoids are Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir. If none of these varietals tickle your fancy just use this rule of thumb: the sweeter the wine, the fewer the flavinoids. Serious and passionate red wines are your best bet for a flavonoid burst.

Eat your heart out. Cocoa has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine. Antioxidants combat free-radicals which are normally produced in our bodies. But everybody knows that chocolate is a great source of antioxidants. Here's a fun fact you may not know: chocolate has an exceptional high amount of phenylethylamine. Phenethylamine is related to amphetamines, which is a central nervous system stimulant that increases energy. It peaks when you are in love and surges into the brain at the time of an orgasm.

Lips like sugar

Yesterday a client came in to see me for a facial. Right away I noticed that she was suffering from an ailment I think we can all relate to this time of year...

Chapped lips.

My client's pucker was parched and scaly. I couldn't let her go on like that.
Here is the impromptu lip treatment I invented to restore her ravaged feature.

Step 1: Prepare. Camellia oil, a celebrated emollient, is infused into the lips using warm steam. This loosens up any dead skin crackling on the surface.

Step 2: Peel. Papaya enzyme mildly exfoliates dead skin cells. Revealing the smooth, supple tissue beneath.

Step 3: Provide. Carrot seed mask is then applied, saturating the lips with essential vitamins, leaving the lips supple and succulent.

Step 4: Polish. A touch of Tease lip gloss and that the smile is sultry again.

Mwah! This treatment made her pout so perfect that I was inspired to extend this service to all of my clients. From now until Valentines Day I am adding this lip treat on to every Signature Facial.

Sweet Victory

King 5 Evening Magazine has announced the winner of the Best Facial in Western Washington 2009, and I am thrilled that Suite 300 Skin Care has secured first place!

This past year has been a real challenge. Opening a new location during the hardest economic period of our lives was difficult at best. Fortunately I have the most wonderful clients in the world, and that makes me love my job even more. Giving people Facials is my life's passion. My clients come to me feeling stressed and frustrated, they leave feeling beautiful and blissful. This is not an exaggeration. Ask any of my clients and they will tell you as much.

Let me give you an example, last Friday a client of mine came in for a facial. She had just returned from climbing in the Himalayas. She had been back in the country for less than 24 hours. At the beginning of our treatment she had tears in her eyes, sallow, exhausted, telling me about her experiences and how they had effected her. The altitude had depleted her ability to retain moisture. I began by rubbing jojoba and jasmine oil onto her scalp and hair. Her skin had burned and peeled and was in a delicate state. I gently exfoliated her face and chest with a pomegranate enzyme peel. After cleaning her pores, I massaged apricot kernel and lavender oils into her dehydrated complexion. Her shoulders were particularly tense from the pack she had carried, so I paid special attention to relieving the tension there. During a vitamin C mask I applied Shea butter and ylang ylang oil to her arms and hands. The treatment ended with a protein serum, firming cream and a final stroke of peppermint oil to her upper back and base of her neck. When she emerged from my treatment room her skin was glowing. With a smile from ear to ear she thanked me for helping her with her re-entry and told me that there was no better way to assimilate back into her life.

That example is just a sliver of the joy I share with my clients every day.

I have had a life long fascination with health and beauty. As a child I spent my favorite days beside my Grandmother in her garden. Intrigued by the aromas and textures I began my journey of discovering the healing powers of nature. My curiosity led me to Tenzing Momo, the celebrated apothecary in Seattle's Pike Place Market. I worked there for several years learning the healing property of flowers, herbs and essential oils. During this period I had the privilege to work alongside a nutritionist. The wisdom she shared about what we feed our bodies confirmed my passion for natural remedies. As I matured into a more accomplished herbalist, skin care became my specialty.

Eventually I decided to take my knowledge of holistic medicine to the next level. I studied Esthetics at the Euro Institute of Skin Care, becoming an Esthetician in 2003 and opening my private skin care practice in 2005. Because of my unique background my approach to skin care is highly specialized. My philosophy is nurturing each client from the inside out instead of merely treating the surface. I don't believe in false promises or high pressure sales. I do believe in combining modern dermal technology with ancient healing traditions.

I am starting this blog for the same reason I opened my skin care studio, to provide a resource for anyone who wants to have a healthy, glowing complexion. I will post information about the latest breakthrough in procedures and products as well as treatments you can make with ingredients from your own garden. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
